Reno Newborn Photographer | Mommy Monday { Birthday Traditions }

Welcome to Mommy Monday, a spot for me to share with you some of my moments related to motherhood and parenting and the fine blend between family, motherhood and being a Reno photographer. Please note, the information provided in these posts is not to replace the sound and professional advice from your health care provider, child’s pediatrician, certified doula or your own maternal instinct.

I love birthdays. When I was a little girl, we had big parties with all the cousins and everyone at our tiny home, lots of food and coconut cake (don’t ask, it must be a Vietnamese thing). As we moved away from our large families, the celebrations got smaller and smaller. It was somewhat sad, so I think that’s why I love birthdays even more so now as an adult. If it could be a month long celebration, I’d be all for it. As a Reno newborn photographer, I love celebrating the arrival of my newest tiniest client and showering them with beautiful newborn portraiture! I love to shower attention on my little ones for their birthdays and also on my big guy for his birthday, especially a milestone birthday.

We celebrated early with friends in town, lots of golf, lake festivities and a party at our home. I did not tell my boys ahead of time about the party as you know how children are…they speak their mind very freely and I didn’t want them to blow my cover. I planned for weeks (okay, maybe just a week or two truly) and took Friday to madly dash around and get everything done in a matter of hours. Talk about a marathon! Everything was done just in the nick of time and as friends started to arrive, my youngest took cover while my oldest played Mr. Sociable.

It was a fantastic evening and we don’t get to host many events at all, so it was unique for the boys to be “hosts” and to play nicely with the other children and (gasp!) share their toys. They did surprisingly well! And my other half was happily surprised, too. It’s incredible what a gathering of good friends, good food, love, warmth and laughter will do for the soul. We enjoyed a late night, topped with cake and cupcakes and all 40 candles. Yes, I like to put ALL the candles on the cake. (We didn’t set off the smoke alarm as we had done for the 34th birthday, luckily). I recall looking at my boys racing back and forth with their trucks at 10pm and thinking, what fun to be a child and not have a care in the world (and to get to stay up so late)!

Here’s a peek at the preparations, the celebration and the down time to recover. I love celebrating with my family and hope they continue the traditions and events we’ve started with them. How was your weekend with your little ones? What are your favorite birthday traditions?
