Reno Photographer | Black and White, or Shades of Grey

I love a fantastic black and white image. I’m not sure if that’s because I started in film photography shooting and developing black and white images, or the classic appeal of a solid black and white image. It has to speak to me, shout to me and have a certain feel and mood to it. As an artist and a professional photographer, there are some images I’ll present as a black and white conversion and others I do not. I feel this is my artistic expression and it represents my brand and my work. When you get a black and white image from me, you’ll know that image was meant to be presented as a black and white. I’ve got some of my favorites below from a beauty session, maternity session and a wedding to share with you. Wouldn’t you say these make great black and white images? I think so! My friend Tara took a spin on our Black and White topic this week, too! Head over to Tara Colburn Photography to read what she has in store for today’s topic!

Christine - These are all so amazing – love your black and white images!! That first one took my breath away!

Angela Douglas Ramsey - I love all of these images. I am also a huge fan of B&W images.

Melissa Berg - All three are gorgeous! I particularly love the last image. Fabulous job Huong!

Donna Beck - Love it, you do such beautiful work!

Patricia Knight - Black and white images do indeed hold a timeless beauty. Wonderful images Huong!

David G - 50 Shades of Huong?

Black and white images can be striking because they draw the viewer’s eye to the brightest spot (usually the face) and eliminate distracting elements (that compete for attention) like bright clothing. Nice images!

Ally D - These are gorgeous!!! And great examples of your fantastic photography!

Reno Photographer | Mommy Monday { Guest Post }

Welcome to Mommy Monday, a spot for me to share with you some of my moments related to motherhood and parenting and the fine blend between family, motherhood and being a Reno photographer. Please note, the information provided in these posts is not to replace the sound and professional advice from your health care provider, child’s pediatrician, certified doula or your own maternal instinct.

I am so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by quite an incredible group of photographers from around the globe. I follow their work, read their blog and if time allows, even get to interact with them somewhat regularly! My friend Dorie from Dorie Howell Photography, in Vienna, VA, recently wrote an article that just struck me. Today, I’m sharing this with my readers and especially my mommy readers.

Guest Blog Post from Dorie Howell Photography:

I have always found it ironic that we teach our children not to talk to strangers but, when a stranger says hello to them in the grocery store or someone unknown tries to interact with them, we force them to respond.  That has never made sense to me.  I don’t want my daughter to be rude but I also don’t feel the need for her to talk and be friendly to everyone she meets because she feels obligated to do so.  I apologize in advance if you meet us in a store or out in public and you try to make conversation with her and she doesn’t respond, or turns away.  Don’t be offended when I don’t automatically turn to her and make her interact with you.  It isn’t personal.   I just am trying my best not to send her mixed messages about interacting with people we don’t know.  I will be happy to talk with you and once we are best of  friends, then she will probably become your new friend too.

I say all this to introduce you to Pattie Fitzgerald.  Pattie is the founder of Safely Ever After, Inc.  Check out her website.   Safely Ever After is a program that teaches Innovative, Non-Fearful Safety Programs for Parents & Kids… She has some great resources and ideas on her website and also a book called “No Trespassing – This Is MY Body!” For ages 3-8 and available on amazon.com.  Check it out!

What caught my eye on Pattie’s website were her Super Ten, Play-It-Safe rules for Kids and Grown-ups.  Several of them really resonated with me and I have started using the ideas in this list of rules as I continue to teach my daughter about safety around strangers.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here is the list of some GREAT ideas for our kids.

1.  I AM THE BOSS OF MY OWN BODY!

2.  I know my NAME, ADDRESS, & PHONE NUMBER, and my parent’s names too (Don’t forget: children need to know their parent’s cell phone numbers too!)

3.  Safe Grownups Don’t Ask Kids for Help!  (The ask other grownups if they need assistance).

4.  I never go ANYWHERE or take ANYTHING from someone I don’t know.

5.  I must ALWAYS “CHECK FIRST”  with my safe grownup for permission:  before I go anywhere, change my plans or get into a car – even if its with someone I know.  If I can’t check first, then the answer is “NO”!

6.  Everyone’s bathing suit areas are PRIVATE

7.  I don’t have to be POLITE, if someone makes me feel scared or uncomfortable. It’s okay to say NO… even to a grownup, if I have to.

8.  I don’t keep SECRETS… especially if they make me feel scared or uneasy. (No adult should tell a child to keep a secret)

9.  If I ever get LOST in a public place, I can FREEZE & YELL or go to a Mom with Kids and ask for help.

10.  I will always pay attention to my Special Inner Voice, especially if I get an “uh-oh” feeling.

Some of those rules are common sense to us but a few really made me think.  Especially numbers 3, 5 and 9. Grown-ups don’t ask children for help, Moms with kids are probably very good people to search for when lost and it is OK for my daughter to say NO to a stranger.

I hope that these rules help you communicate safety to your child.   Let’s keep our children safe.

And because no post is complete without a picture.  This has been a big week.  As you can see, someone lost her first tooth.  Not sure this momma is ready for this yet.  Slow down sweet girl.

What do you think of these rules?  What other things are you do going to help teach your children to be safe?  I would love to hear from you.

Thank you, Dorie! If you’d like to head over to Dorie’s original blog post, you can do so here! Please say hello to her and thank her for sharing this great information!

I’ve worked with Melinda and her family for over a year now and just adore them. Matt and Melinda are such an amazing and fun couple and their daughter is just the cutest little spitfire. I can’t wait to meet little sister when she arrives next February! Melinda has been working with me on a maternity timeline project and while we were in the studio, I made sure to take their family portraits as well since it’s been over a year since their family portraits I did last year.

We got family portraits, some fun Christmas bokeh lights in the background and Kaelyn had fun with glitter. What more could a little girl want?! Here’s a peek into the family portrait portion of our day together! Thank you, Melinda, Matt and Kaelyn for working with me and my ideas!

What do you do when you’ve lost over 70 pounds in about a year’s time, have a new lease on life and will celebrate your 58th birthday?! You get together with me for a beauty session and celebrate the woman you are! I’ve waited very patiently for Lonnie to feel ready. I tell all my clients how important it is to celebrate the woman they are in this moment as opposed to waiting until the “moment is perfect”. Too often we lose sight of our own needs as we tend to care for everyone else around us and not ourselves. However, for Lonnie, those days are over!

She has worked so hard in the past year to take control of her own life again in many areas and one of them being her battle with food. She’s re-learned how to eat nutritiously and as a result, has lost 70+ pounds. She feels so great and that’s the BEST part. She told me she slipped into gowns and dresses she hasn’t touched in ages and they zipped up without a snag (no pun intended). I’m so happy for Lonnie and so happy she has found herself as a fine and fabulous 58-year old woman. She has much to celebrate!

Here are a couple of my personal favorites from my beauty session with Lonnie. Photography makes a great gift for yourself, so if you want to capture you as you are in this moment, please call me at 775.233.8382 or email shootme@huongforrest.com to discuss your session!

I love when I can empower a woman to step in front of the camera and have an experience where they get to receive the royal treatment and look and feel amazing! From the first time I shared my work with Tracy, she was all in. Yes, it’s been months waiting, but I’m glad I was patient and waited for her and then again when her son broke his leg. Motherhood is never easy and oftentimes, we put the needs of everyone else well ahead of our own wants and needs.

Tracy started with hair and makeup with Danielle before we stepped into the studio. I posed and worked her body and we had a great time! I showed her a few peeks and she was so excited. Here are a few of my favorites from the beauty photography portion of her session and if you’d like to see a bit more from the boudoir photography session, head over to Revealed by Huong.

Have you been neglecting yourself? Would you like to step into some pampering and allow me to guide you into capturing stunning portraits of yourself? You deserve this so call me at 775.233.8382 or email shootme@huongforrest.com to discuss your portrait session. You won’t regret it!
